Phenergan syrup is an antihistamine drug that is used to encounter different reactions that take place in the body. It blocks the production of histamine chemicals in our body which are responsible for allergic reactions take place in the body.

Phenergan syrup used for:

Phenergan syrup is considered an anti-allergic drug and it is used for the treatment of allergic symptoms such as runny nose, itching, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, hives, and itchy skin rashes. It is also used in the treatment of epilepsy, dermatological disorders, insect bites, Insomnia, myoclonus, and labyrinthine disorder. It is also used as a sedative or sleep aid. Phenergan is also available in the form of tablets and injections.

Composition:

Phenergan syrup is composed of Promethazine, an antihistamine drug used to block histamine production that can cause different allergic reactions.

Side effects:

The following are the side effects that can occur:

  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Constipation
  • Drowsiness
  • Mood swings
  • Yellowing of eyes and skin
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Easy bleeding
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Mental changes

Phenergan syrup dose for a child:

Use Phenergan syrup in children exactly as prescribed and follow all the instructions given by the doctor.

Age Dose
For children below 2 years Phenergan syrup is not recommended for children below 2 years because it may cause breathing problems or death in very young children.
For children above 2 years 1 teaspoon 3 times a day.

Phenergan syrup for adults:

Adults can take the same dose that is prescribed for children above two years which is 1 teaspoon 3 times a day.

Precautions:

The following are the precautions for Phenergan syrup:

Allergic reactions:

If you are allergic to promethazine or similar drugs, then it is advised not to take this medicine. It is better to consult your doctor before taking this medication.

Asthma or lower respiratory tract disorder:

You should not take Phenergan syrup if you are encountering asthma or another lower respiratory tract disorder. If you are facing these conditions consult your doctor before taking this medication.

Pregnancy:

You have to consult your doctor first if you are pregnant because studies have not shown any side effects in animals but it is better to consult your doctor.

Breastfeeding:

It is not known whether Phenergan passes into breast milk or not so it is advised to consult your doctor before taking this medication in this condition.

What does Phenergan do for kids:

Phenergan is used to treat allergic symptoms but it has sedative effects so parents use Phenergan syrup because it makes children sleepy.

Is Phenergan syrup safe for babies:

Phenergan syrup is not safe for newborns or less than 2 years babies because their liver is not mature enough and their metabolism process is very slow as a result their concentration or peak level in blood remains for a long time and this cause more sedation and there are chances of suppression in respiratory centers and your child may suffer from sleep apnea and this may lead to respiratory distress or respiratory failure or it may cause death.

Phenergan may cause effects that impair your thinking and may make you dizzy or drowsy and it may have an impact on your brain, as a result, you may become unconscious.

Melatonin Syrup is used as an alternative to Phenergan syrup for a sleep aid in kids.
